Black Friday looks like a day you need to be fast. In reality it is a day when it is too late to decide anything: those who arrive with a list and knowledge of prices save money, those who arrive to browse pay for someone's marketing.
The discount is counted from a price you never checked
Weeks before the sale, some stores quietly raise prices so the "−50%" badge is counted from an inflated base. Formally not a lie: that price really was there. In practice — a discount off thin air.
The only defense is knowing the real price in advance. Not "roughly remembering" it — writing it down.
A list beats speed
Build a list of specific items in October: model, size, color, today's price. On sale day you are not choosing — you are checking. Anything not on the list was pushed on you by the store.
Impulse purchases are what any sale actually earns on. A list turns you from the sale's target into its user.
Watch the price, not the badge
From October on, check your items every week or two. Three or four readings and you will know for sure whether November's discount is honest. You will also catch the price if it drops earlier: a good share of "Friday" prices appear weeks before the Friday itself.
Cashback and promo codes stack — in the right order
Around big sales stores often change both cashback rates and the set of promo codes — check both right before paying, not from memory.
The order never changes: find the promo code first, click through the cashback link second, pay third. The click must be the last one — otherwise the cashback goes past you.
What to do about it
- In October: a list of items with today's prices.
- Once a week: a quick price check on the list.
- On sale day: compare with what you wrote down, not with what is crossed out.
- Before paying: promo code, then the cashback click, then payment — exactly in that order.
- The right item at an honest price — buy it right away: popular sizes run out before the sale ends.
